How does auto engine works?

February 18th, 2009

颅The purpose of a gasoline car engine is to convert gasoline into motion so that your car can move. Currently the easiest way to create motion from gasoline is to burn the gasoline inside an engine. Therefore, a car engine is an internal combustion engine — combustion takes place internally. Two things to note:

There are different kinds of internal combustion engines. Diesel engines are one form and gas turbine engines are another. See also the articles on HEMI engines, rotary engines and two-stroke engines. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

There is such a thing as an external combustion engine. A steam engine in old-fashioned trains and steam boats is the best example of an external combustion engine. The fuel (coal, wood, oil, whatever) in a steam engine burns outside the engine to create steam, and the steam creates motion inside the engine. Internal combustion is a lot more efficient (takes less fuel per mile) than external combustion, plus an internal combustion engine is a lot smaller than an equivalent external combustion engine. This explains why we don’t see any cars from Ford and GM using steam engines.

Byd is Coming!

Maybe it鈥檚 because I have a giant-sized soft spot for any underdog, but when we took to the Detroit Auto Show this year I really wanted to see Chinese car makers BYD and Brilliance kick ass. Unfortunately 鈥渒ick ass鈥 isn鈥檛 really the term I鈥檇 use for either company鈥檚 product. From what I hear, both have made bounds and leaps of progress compared to last year鈥檚 display, but embarrassing problems like epic body panel gaps and interiors that would embarrass Fisher Price were deal-breakers. Now it looks like the Chinese automakers may show up here in the states as early as 2010. That鈥檚 in 10 short month鈥檚 time for those of you who aren鈥檛 counting. How would a new car company build a dealer network, let alone a fleet of cars, in less than a year? Here鈥檚 a thought: partner with all those big box stores we loathe so much. That鈥檚 right, you can bring home your discount Chinese furniture, clothing, sporting goods and toys in your similarly discount whip. What鈥檚 more, the cars would likely be built in Mexico to keep down import costs. You know, this world ending in 2012 thing is looking more and more likely every day.

Detroit Auto Show

February 15th, 2009

Chinese cars have been displayed at the Detroit Auto Show for the past several years. Many industry critics ridiculed them for design or quality flaws. But others see these first Chinese vehicles and remember how Japanese and Korean cars were once laughed off鈥攐nly to become mainstream products in America.

Kathleen Ligocki, CEO of GS Motors and formerly president of Ford of Mexico, expects Chinese-designed cars to begin production in Mexico in 2010鈥攁nd make their way to the US about five years after first testing the waters in Latin America and Canada. GS Motors, a Mexican company, already imports three models from China鈥檚 First Auto Works (FAW) and sold 4,000 of them in Mexico last year.

Here鈥檚 the zinger: Ligocki believes Chinese cars will be sold in the US through big-box stores like Costco or Wal-Mart, which is how GS Motors is retailing them in Mexico.

GS is building an assembly plant in Michoacan, Mexico with FAW. The plan is for vehicles to roll off the line beginning in 2010. GS Motors will launch the FAW brand in Mexico this year with the F1 Hatchback, an entry-level car sold for under $5,500. FAW, one of the largest Chinese automakers, is allied in China with Volkswagen. FAW also produces the Miles ZX40, a small van-style neighborhood electric vehicle, developed by Miles Electric Vehicles, based on Santa Monica, Calif.

GS Motors is racing to bring the first Chinese cars to America via Mexico鈥攂ut they are not alone. BYD (Build Your Dreams) showed plug-in hybrid and electric model in Detroit last month and promised to bring them to the US as early as next year. In fact, many of China鈥檚 80 or so auto companies have made similar gestures, with varying degrees of seriousness.

Byd’s first Plug-In Green Cars for Sale

February 15th, 2009

BYD Auto nosed out ahead of General Motors (GM), Toyota and Nissan on Dec. 15 by debuting China鈥檚 first mass-produced plug-in hybrid, the F3DM. Though it鈥檚 not much to look at and has a rather forgettable name, it鈥檚 an impressive step forward for hybrids, the auto industry and China.

The F3DM gets juiced from a normal electricity outlet and pushes up to 60 mph in a respectable 10 seconds, also runs up to 60 miles on electricity before gas power kicks in. It鈥檚 not a sports car, to say the least; the F3DM feels much more like the conservative Toyota Camry inside and out, and starts at $22,000. Also its near-silent engine adds to the impressive driving experience, heightening awareness of the wind and humming tires sounds.

Warren Buffet (MidAmerican Energy, controlled by Berkshire Hathaway) invested $231 million in BYD a short time ago to charge the electric car into the American market by 2010, clueing in analysts in China鈥檚 potential in developing environmentally-friendly cars.

However, what BYD faces in implementing the F3DM hybrid car is the weak infrastructure in China. Most people live in large apartment buildings where recharging plug-ins are extremely scarce.

Byd,green car?

February 15th, 2009

That’s not the opinion of Honda CEO about BYD’s capabilities to develop a decent electric car. Coming from the mouth of one of world’s carmaker from a country very advanced in electronic, this declaration has some weight. However, although the F3DM is internally made, BYD may in the future build partnership with some more skilled company to build a better product. The government of China is encouraging it companies to innovate and develop the green cars, so expect in the future progress in this field in China.

BYD Automotive Company

February 13th, 2009

Fresh off of its first ever main showroom floor appearance at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, the BYD Automotive Company has high hopes in its bid to sell cars in the American marketplace. The Chinese company, who goes under the tag line Build Your Dreams, expects to sell both pure electric and plug-in hybrid cars through its yet to be formed U.S. dealer network.

According to BYD, their future line up will include the F3DM, what the company says is the world鈥檚 first mass-produced plug-in hybrid sedan, and the battery-powered e6, a mid-size five-passenger crossover vehicle with a range of up to 250 miles on a single charge.

Speaking from the floor of the North American International Auto Show at Detroit鈥檚 Cobo Center, BYD Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu also said the company plans to set up manufacturing facilities in the U.S. 鈥渨hen it is appropriate.鈥

In house battery technology, known as the Fe battery will power BYD vehicles.聽 BYD asserts that the Fe battery is extremely safe, environmentally friendly and affordable. It can be quick-charged to 50% of capacity in only 10 minutes, and will have a life cycle of more than 10 years.

Right now, the Fe battery is used in the e6 electric crossover vehicle, as well as BYD鈥檚 new Dual Mode family of plug-in hybrid vehicles, including the compact F3DM sedan and the mid-size F6DM sedan, which can run in either pure-electric or hybrid-electric mode.

At the Detroit conference, Wang was joined by David Sokol, chairman of MidAmerican Energy Holdings, the energy wing of Warren Buffett鈥檚 Berkshire Hathaway, which last fall acquired a 10% stake in BYD Auto鈥檚 parent company, BYD Company Ltd.

Sokol said, 鈥淲e are working with BYD on developing charging technologies and infrastructure that would help promote plug-in hybrid and all-electric vehicles. For the electric-vehicle market to mature, the underlying charging infrastructure and technologies must mature at least simultaneously, if not first. Perhaps like no other corporate entity in the world, we are in a position to help make that happen.鈥

Sokol, who is a member of BYD鈥檚 board of directors, also said MidAmerican Energy Holdings is working with BYD on demonstration projects that will allow the partners to store energy from such renewable sources as wind and solar, to be deployed into the grid when needed.
